Why Should You Join Local 695 and the IATSE?
(And how to apply)

- WHY -

Without Union affiliation, you are alone and isolated at the lowest end of the work environment, lacking the means to protect your own self-interests. No doubt, your personal experience will confirm the fact that alone, you have very little negotiating power against a Producer who is determined to give you just as little as possible.

With Union affiliation, you are participating in critical decisions that affect your life, such as daily wages, continuing education, medical benefits for yourself and your family, holiday pay, retirement benefits, work conditions and professional representation in the work place. There is, indeed, strength in numbers, and with thousands of other IATSE workers on your side, you can have control over your future in this industry.

Labor organizations in this country have sustained setbacks in recent years, but a dramatic turnabout is now afoot. In just a few short years, the new IA has nationally regained almost complete control of its traditional jurisdiction. Get on board for one of the most historic rebirths in labor history. Things will only improve as we move into the future.

  • Better Conditions and Better Pay  Local 695 and the IATSE have negotiated hard and long with the producers to assure safe and decent working conditions for its members. Yes, it is an uphill battle and it often seems like the producer is trying to take something away from us. But with strength in numbers, the IATSE and Local 695 can demand, and usually receive, the conditions and terms that are most essential for the membership. Our priorities include insuring the physical safety of our members, protecting your job security, and obtaining fair benefits and wages that continue to grow.

  • Superior Health Insurance  Local 695 members can qualify for one of the finest medical plans available. You and your entire family can choose from a range of options, whether you select an HMO or you continue to use your own doctors. Coverage even includes benefits omitted from many health plans, such as pregnancy, dental and eye care, acupuncture, chiropractors, pharmaceuticals, life insurance, and psychologists.

  • A Pension Plan for Your Future  As soon as you become a member, your employer will begin to make contributions into a retirement plan for you for each and every hour that you work. It costs you nothing.

  • And More  As a member, you will also have access to additional benefits. Local 695 is continually developing educational and training programs to keep our members abreast of new technology. And as members of the AFL-CIO, all IATSE members are also eligible to take advantage of a unique program of discounts for a wide variety of goods and services, can participate in special home mortgage programs, and may even be able to receive credit cards in situations where previous credit problems might make it otherwise impossible.

- HOW -

The following information explains
how to join Local 695. If you have
any questions, please email or call us at
(818) 985-9204 or (213) 877-1052
and ask to speak with a Representative.

1) Prove that you have worked for at least 30 days in your job classification within the past 12 months on IATSE productions. Until you are in Local 695, however, you cannot work on an IATSE production unless there are no other rostered (Local 695) individuals who are available to perform the job that you do. Call the Local and make arrangements to submit your resume and add your name to the list so that you may receive a phone call for work if the opportunity should arise. Once you have the 30 days, complete the Contract Services Industry Experience Roster Application. To obtain the application, either call them at (818) 995-0900, (Kimberly Kemp at Ext. 164) or read this page on their web site www.csatf.org/ier.shtml and download the application here www.csatf.org/ierapp.pdf. You will need to verify all days worked with a letter from the payroll company that issued your checks.

2) Prove that you have worked at least 100 days in your job classification within the last 3 years on ANY production, IATSE, or non-IATSE. To apply for roster status, call Contract Services at (818) 995-0900 (Kimberly Kemp at Ext. 164) and obtain an application. You will need to verify all days worked with pay stubs and a letter from the payroll company that issued your checks.

3) The easiest, fastest, and cheapest way to join Local 695 is if you are working on a non-IATSE production at the time that it becomes organized, (goes Union) and you have completed 30 days of work experience in your job classification. In that instance, you are offered immediate membership into the Local and the initiation fee is lowered by as much as 85% off the usual amount. If you wish to join Local 695 and are currently working on non-IATSE productions, call the Local to tell them about the production you are working on and they will attempt to organize (Unionize) that production. Your name will not be mentioned to the employer and your job will not be in jeopardy.
